Autumn Highlights 7- so good, it could be a maple!

Fagus sylvatica 'Mercedes' is a classy beech of modest size - we got ours as a free gift before we left the UK, but it is popular and easy to find here in France. The leaves are elegantly cut and shaped, and the tree has a neat tight conical form that adds a touch of quiet formality where you might need it.

Our 'Mercedes' is around 3m high x 1.5m wide after fifteen years, so this is not a tree for a tiny garden, but on the other hand it isn't an arboretum specimen only for people establishing their own Westonbirt!

I wandered round our garden yesterday in the weird half-light of a foggy early evening: not the ideal time for photography! The autumn yellow/gold of this tree shone out invitingly from a distance, so I thought I would go and admire the effect from close up.

It's good - almost as good as a maple!
