Autumn Highlights 6

I hate to bore people with so many Japanese maples at this time of year, but some are so distinctive that they just beg to be shared. We are running out of space for larger varieties, so I'm turning my interest to the miniature forms -'natural bonsai' I suppose.

This is Acer palmatum 'O jishi', a tiny graft found on Ebay about seven years ago: even after all this time it is under 2ft high, and it stands out for its strange angular form and tiny crinkled leaves.

For Acer enthusiasts this is like a pocket version of the vigorous Acer palmatum 'Shishigashira', but the autumn colours are infinitely better. You can get an idea of the scale of this tree by comparing it with the standard sized label.

This is definitely my favourite.....today!
