One Friday recently I awarded myself a trip south to the other side of Angers to a 'Portes Ouvertes' at one of France's biggest producers of perennial plants. It was a hot and exhausting drive (2.5hrs each way), and I was really pleased to finally pull up to my front gate just after 7.
Food was on the table: I hated to seem ungrateful, but I just had to rush in and grab my camera first to snatch these memorable pictures of a Japanese maple by the front gate shining in autumn colours in a shaft of evening sunshine.
I love the way the colours vary on leaves which were partly shaded by other leaves, creating a fascinating if ephemeral effect.
Acer palmatum 'Mejetsu' is an uncommon variety, unusual for its love of sunshine, and for the huge leaves which display the colours of autumn so brilliantly. It never disappoints!
