'Conker trees are huge!' - not necessarily: if you love the colours of the genus Aesculus but don't want to hire a cherry picker to view the flowers, there's an Aesculus to fit most gardens - we grow most of these smaller species here.
Aesculus indica 'Sidney Pearce' delights in spring with eye-level upright pink and yellow flowers. The leaves are quite coarse, so the autumn colours are best viewed at a distance. They only last a couple of weeks, but they shine with a glorious golden blaze, then turn rich russet brown before they fall.
(The blue/green leaves in the corner foreground are another small species: Aesculus chinensis. Autumn colours are less spectacular, but the white flowers in spring are really striking.)
